Man stabbed to death after intervening in argument

A 55-year-old man who opened his door after hearing the screams of a woman seeking shelter from an argument with another man was stabbed to death Wednesday night in Chicago’s Rosemoor neighborhood, police said.

The fight began about 7 p.m. in the 10300 block of South Forest Avenue. The woman fled from the man and ran to a neighbor’s house a couple of doors south, police said.

The man who was killed, identified as William Terry by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, opened the door and tried to intervene.

His male attacker walked back up the block, grabbed two knives from the home where the fight began, went back to the house and stabbed Terry, police said.

Someone called 911 and reported a “person with a knife.” But when police arrived, they found Terry facedown and bleeding.

An autopsy conducted Thursday determined that Terry died of multiple stab wounds and cuts, according to the medical examiner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Gail Briscoe, who has lived on Forest Avenue for 30 years, said the incident took place at Terry’s sister’s home.

Briscoe said she was at home when the police arrived. The stabbing took place on the porch, she said.

“Nothing like this has ever happened here before,” Briscoe said.

On Thursday, the lawn in front of the Rosemoor home was covered in a layer of leaves and a few gauze wrappers left over from paramedics.

Another neighbor, Uniece Perkins, said she arrived home shortly after the stabbing and saw Terry’s sister holding him on the front porch. His sister was applying pressure to his wounds and trying to comfort him until help arrived, Perkins said.

“She was trying to keep him awake, but he was losing so much blood,” Perkins said. “It was really, really bad.”

Perkins said she heard from others that the fight started in the street and involved a man who lived “a couple blocks down.”

Perkins said neighbors who gathered outside Wednesday night after the stabbing were concerned about Terry’s family.

“We are all shocked. This is a neighborhood where we check on each other,” Perkins said. “We know everyone on this block. It’s usually very quiet and calm.”

Terry lived in the 14100 block of South Tracy Avenue in Riverdale, a spokesman for the medical examiner’s office said.

Police were continuing to investigate, and no arrests had been made Thursday.
